The Tale of Jorun Aragunnrsdottir

Hear now the tale of Jorun Aragunnrsdottir
For fighting alone does not a shield-maiden make
With nought but a sword she’s but fit for the slaughter
But by her stout efforts the bravest foemen shall quake.

A warrior unclothed will soon find herself in distress
For fighting alone does not a shield-maiden make
You need not go on a quest for a seamstress
So skilled is she at sewing she need not be awake.

Traveling on a campaign may seem to be grim
For fighting alone does not a shield-maiden make
Embroidery, needlework, add in some trim
With such subtle touches the doldrums she’ll shake.

Weapons and armor are the least of her need
For fighting alone does not a shield-maiden make
Marching to war, it’s her clansmen she’ll feed
Delights for the palate she’ll cook and she’ll bake.

None said before is her most valuable feature
For fighting alone does not a shield-maiden make
Prized above all is her role as a teacher
Spreading knowledge about for Society’s sake.

Here starts the tale of Jorun Aragunnrsdottir
For fighting alone does not a shield-maiden make
With nought but a sword she’s but fit for the slaughter
But by her stout efforts the bravest foemen shall quake.

This was part of my award recommendation for Jorun Aragunnrsdottir to become a Companion of the Order of the Willow. It is meant to be sung in a minor key, to a tune of my own composition inspired by some of the Nordic songs sung around SCA bardic circles (in other words, I have no idea how period it really is). Unfortunately, I neglected to keep a copy of the explanatory text that goes with it, and the recommendation no longer shows up in my active recommendations. So the rest of this is from memory. Jorun is known for her seamstress skills, especially in Nordic clothing. This also includes embroidery and trim. She also cooks reasonably period food for our household at Pennsic (allowing for allergies and diet). Recently, she has begun teaching how to sew Nordic clothing. She also pieced together her own armor, having authorized for armored combat late last fall.

Jorun was made a Companion of the Order of the Willow at Border Wars, June 15, AS XLVII. Since she was unable to attend, the award was presented to her at the following business meeting.
